Most commonly found in the UK are the ‘Common Wasp’ and the ‘German Wasp’. They are active during the summer months (May-August) and are notorious for their painful sting.
Some individuals can have an allergic reaction to their venom (known as anaphylaxis) which can be life-threatening (although rare) and therefore results in emergency treatment.
Wasps build their nests in sheltered areas either outdoors (under eaves) or indoors (roof spaces or wall cavities) and can live from a few months up to 1 year.
If you do notice an excess presence of wasps then it’s likely that a nest is close by. Observing where wasps fly to can indicate where the nest is located. If you find it anywhere near your property then keep children and pets away from the area as disturbing them can provoke them to aggressively attack and sting.
Nests tend to start small (golf ball sized) in their early stages and later develop into much larger nests (the size of a football) that could house thousands of wasps.
Prevention is better than cure
Preventing wasps from becoming attracted to your property is a lot easier than having them removed once they have established their nest. Make sure that rubbish bins are kept well away from entrances to your building whilst ensuring that bin lids remain tightly closed and are emptied regularly.
You can attempt to remove benign, small nests using DIY methods. However, in some cases the nest may be in a hard to reach area or be of a size that would require the help of an expert for it to be removed safely.
